Scientifically, such a contingency can never have befallen of itself. According to one theory of the Universe, the momentum of Original Impress has been tending toward this far-off, divine event ever since a scrap of fire-mist flew from the solar centre to form our planet. Not this event alone, of course; but every occurrence, past and present, from the fall of captured Troy to the fall of a captured insect. According to another theory, I hold an independent diploma as one of the architects of our Social System, with a commission to use my own judgment, and take my own risks, like any other unit of humanity. This theory, unlike the first, entails frequent hitches and cross-purposes; and to some malign operation of these I should owe my present holiday.

It is said that Such is Life was not considered commercially viable by publishers of Furphy's day and when eventually published it sold only a third of the run. A lively, humorous depiction of the rural life of bushmen, stockmen, swagmen, squatters and gold prospectors in the latter part of the 19th century, Such is Life is marred by an excessively verbose and digressive narration. While the author impresses with his literary culture (Shakespeare is quoted at length) and references to philosophy and metaphysics, for example, the digressions and laboured accounts resembling shaggy dog tales can be tiresome. In addition Furphy insists on transcribing foreign accents phonetically which makes for some heavy reading. I personally read this as part of research on rural life in 19th century Australia and as such it is valuable, as it would be for any student of Australian history. It is a shame that someone who wrote with such ironic verve did not manage to write with greater clarity.

Great product, shipped fast. Thank you!
I've read a lot of books, and I think I have high level of tolerance for even a piece of rubbish.

However, this novel is written very very badly. Sentences are extremely convoluted. The sentences of Lord of the Rings are complex, but they are with a lot of grace and enjoyable to read. For this novel, however, the sentences are convoluted without any aim other than merely trying to postpone the placing of the period. I read 5 pages and I gave up.

Try it if you want to test your tolerance.
I came upon the one review to date of this book by accident and am bemused. I first read this book about 50 years ago and was amazed by it. I think it one of the great novels in English. It is certainly the finest product of Australian literature prior to Les Murray.
Tom Collins' is the pen name of Joseph Furphy, and it's no coincidence that 'furphy' is an Australianism for a story of dubious accuracy. This book, written in the early years of the century, is funny, moving and full of 'the real Australia', but unlike many such yarns, it's also a genuine piece of literature, with a complex plotline and surpisingly modern construction. After The Magic Pudding, it's the best book to read if you want a glimpse of Anglo-Celtic Australian heritage.
They say there's an old, red continent down below those tropic isles where white rice is a constant. Once upon a time it was inhabited by squatters, drovers, swagmen, bushrangers, tank builders, boundary riders, and a host of other characters. Together, their lives formed a pattern that was later woven into the Great Australian Legend---the legend of the bush and mateship. If you ever wanted to read the details of such, to know something of that outback life beyond the towns on the coast where most Australians lived then and now, this is your book. Full of dry, Aussie humor and endless Victorian-style philosophizing in most circuitous language, SUCH IS LIFE contains a number of episodes said to have occurred to the author in 1883 in the area just north of the Murray River (Australia's longest), the country known as the "Riverina". Numerous classical allusions may leave modern readers (like me) scratching their heads and as the author loves to write in dialect, the various English, Scottish, Irish, French, German, Chinese, and Aboriginal accents can grow perplexing as well as tiring. Nevertheless, SUCH IS LIFE presents a fresh, never-stale look at conditions in society in a land that has changed so much in the 130 years since. Just as gold was often found in nuggets down in the Victorian towns of Ballarat and Bendigo, so you will find many gold nuggets of humor and pleasure throughout this book. "Cleopatra" is the name of a male horse that always tried to buck the author off, but would quiet down after failing. Similarly, the book might "buck you off" at first, but I recommend that you persist. You'll be glad.
"Such is Life" is a gritty Australian classic that captures the way it was in the formative years of this young nation. Readers have to be patient, even determined in their pursuit of the many golden nuggets to found in this book. You must forge on through what is sometimes difficult dialogue to follow and poetic flights of philosophical pondering on the meaning of life and the individual's progress through it. But this is a fantastic book, full of wit, and incisive insights into human nature and the unique human capacity to adapt and survive under the harshest of conditions.
Sometimes difficult but never disappointing.
The first time I read Such is Life I laughed out loud, grinned, and chuckled the whole way through. It's not for everyone there are some philosophical/theological ponderings, references from Classical Greek literature, and obscure and archaic Australian slang. But I find it to be absolutely hilarious. I've read it more than once. If you love good wordplay you will love this novel.

It consists of the fictional journal of Tom Collins, set in the later 1800's in Australia. He takes some brief journal entries from previous years and expands on what actually happened. The dialogue is brilliant, there are many subplots woven throughout the seemingly unrelated events, and one grand plot that you have to put together yourself, since the author of the journal never catches on to it.

I suppose well-educated Australians would enjoy this novel most of all, but I certainly hope others can appreciate it, for I find it to be absolutely brilliant and hilarious.
